What are Bridge Courses?
Bridge Courses are courses that provide a review of learning that occurred during the school year. There is a great deal of research on summer learning loss. From the research, we know that the time off in the summer causes gaps in learning. Bridge courses will help close these gaps.  
 
What Bridge Courses are Offered?
The following online courses are offered online and are taught by Norwin teachers.
 
  • Building a Bridge from 5th Grade Math to Prealgebra (Mrs. Duncan)
  • Bridge to 5th Grade Language Arts (Mrs. Kelly)
  • Bridge to 5th Grade Math (Mrs. Hassinger)
 
Building a Bridge from 5th Grade Math to Prealgebra (Intended for students who did not make the cut scores to schedule prealgebra)
Bridge from 5th Grade to Prealgebra is a course for students who are fast tracking from fifth grade math to prealgebra. This course is designed to cover the information that is taught in the sixth grade math curriculum. This course will move quickly through the sixth grade math material. This course is offered to Norwin students who have been recommended to take this course. Students who complete the course with at least a 95% will be given the opportunity to enroll in prealgebra in sixth grade.
Required Face-to-Face Meeting: Mandatory Orientation; You can select one of the following orientations to attend:  
 
Bridge to 5th Grade Language Arts (Intended for students who were in 4th grade during the 2014-2015 School Year)

In 5th grade, students are required to apply many of the grammar concepts to their work. This course has been designed to help students review the parts of speech, sentences, and basic word usage.  By completing this course, students will have a thorough review of many of the basic grammar concepts.

Required Face-to-Face Meeting:  Mandatory Orientation held  TBD  at Hillcrest Intermediate
 
Bridge to 5th Grade math (Intended for students who were in 4th grade during the 2014-2015 School Year)
In fifth grade, students are required to apply and build on the math concepts learned in fourth grade.  Bridge to 5th Grade Math has been designed to review the concepts from fourth grade, including numeration, computation, measurement, geometry, graphing, fractions, etc.  By completing this course, students will have a comprehensive review of the many skills needed to be successful as they transition to 5th grade math.
Required Face-to-Face Meeting:  Mandatory Orientation held TBD at Hillcrest Intermediate
 
When do Bridge Courses Occur?
Bridge courses are online. Bridge to 5th Grade Language Arts and Bridge to 6th Grade Language arts begin June 22, 2015 and end July 24, 2015. Bridge from 5th Grade Math to Prealgebra begins June 22, 2015 and ends July 31, 2015.
 
What is the Cost of a Bridge Course?
Each online bridge course is $150.

How do I Register for a Bridge Course?

My Child is Registered for a Bridge Course, Now What?
You will receive an email with a username and password information for the course. Additionally, you and your child will attend a mandatory orientation at Hillcrest Intermediate School (TBD). During the orientation, your child's online teacher will provide an overview of the course, allow your child to login to the online site, and will answer any questions you have. If needed, your child will also be provided a textbook for use during the course.
